Sheffield (SID) – A Swedish candidate has taken a big step towards the quarter-finals of the European Women’s Football Championship in England. The Olympic bronze medalist won his second match of the group stage in Sheffield 2-1 (0-0) against Switzerland on Wednesday and has four points to lead. The Swiss should only worry about the one-point knockout phase.
Former Munich player and Wolfsburg player Fridolina Rulfo (53rd place) gave Sweden a lead in front of 12,914 spectators at Bramal Lane. Ramona Bachmann (55) equalized after only two minutes, but Hanna Benison (79) scored the Swedish team to win.
The Swiss, who has been suffering from a violent gastro-intestinal wave in the squad for the past few days, entered the match better. A presumed penalty kick was withdrawn after a foul on Noel Maritz after the intervention of the video assistant (9′). Sweden, the first women’s European champion in 1984, got stronger as a result without getting really dangerous.
After changing the team, the Scandinavians increased the pressure and rewarded Bralvo, who shot a free kick from close range. But Switzerland immediately responded: Bachmann equalized after a mistake by goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl.
