The US government has rejected Beijing’s accusations that the US is suppressing the People’s Republic. “In our approach to this important relationship, there is nothing to suggest to anyone that we want confrontation,” US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said yesterday in Washington, referring to China.
He clarified that competition should not be equated with conflict. “We want to compete, we want to win that competition with China, but we want to keep it at that level,” Kirby said.
China warned of “catastrophic” consequences
According to the official Xinhua news agency, Chinese President Xi Jinping said Western countries, led by the United States, had “totally enclosed, encircled and suppressed China,” threatening his country’s development. China’s Foreign Minister Qin Gang warned of “disastrous consequences” if the US “doesn’t step on the brakes”.
The US has imposed export restrictions on China in recent months, including computer chips. The world’s two largest economies compete fiercely to produce semiconductors. By halting deliveries, the US wants to prevent China from using US technology for military purposes.
