Apple removes two apps from tvOS 17.2

Previously, Apple TV owners had to use separate apps to buy or rent movies or TV shows from the iTunes Store. With tvOS 17.2, Apple will remove these apps from the operating system. This was already evident back in October and the latest developer builds now confirm this. Yesterday, Friday, December 8, the second release candidate for tvOS 17.2 was released. It is expected to be released to all consumers next week, thus before Christmas.

Everything is built into the TV app

You’ll soon be able to manage your purchased content in a unified location in the Apple TV app. Users will receive a corresponding notification after updating to tvOS 17.2. At least in the release candidate, the “iTunes Movies” and “iTunes TV Shows” apps remain on the home screen and then point to the TV app — but Apple will likely remove them in the future. The TV app has been revised and now includes a tab for purchases.

iTunes is slowly disappearing

With tvOS 17.2, Apple is moving closer to its long-term goal of ditching the “iTunes” branding. The developer betas for iOS 17.2 and iPadOS 17.2 still contain the “iTunes Store” app, which you can use to purchase and rent content, although this is already possible in the TV app. Apple has not yet finished replacing iTunes for Windows with the new Apple Music app for Windows.
