Regular player right away
While Celestina did not make this progress, Helmut Huberts was an immediate regular. Vienna coach Karl Quanz threw the new acquisitions into the water in the first round on 20 August 1967 against champions Rapid and did so without the veterans and the defense. The team of D. Paulitsch (46. Ecker); Ross, Manfred Reiter, Helmut Peschl II; Fuchs, Celestina (46. Franz Reiter); Horvath, Wagner, Bentinger, Kaiser, Huberts, with five new acquisitions (!) were in a losing battle against Toni Fritsch & Co. and lost 2:5.
Luck for Huberts & Co.: At the end of October 1967, Gerdy Springer from the Carinthian team replaced Karl Quanz as unsuccessful coach – and this began a great time for Sturm with great successes and previously unusual top positions in the national league.
The attack of Murlasits (Tesourinha), Peintinger, Kaiser, Heli Huberts, Springer (Zamut, Reisinger) was the first sign. Huberts, as a “suspended striker”, as they said at the time, was to become a key player in his huge scope of work. For ten years, until 1977, Helmut was one of Sturm's pillars. Later in the 4-2-4 or 4-3-3 system in midfield, and lastly as an attacking left back in the Karl Schlechta era.
