After a few difficult years, tourism in Vienna seems to have recovered. According to the Vienna Tourism Board, there were around 1.9 million overnight stays in August, an increase of 11 percent compared to August 2023.

The federal capital is once again particularly popular with tourists from Germany, the USA and Italy. But there were also many overnight stays from the federal states, with a total of 270,000. Many overnight guests came to visit Vienna, especially from Styria, Upper Austria and Salzburg.

Quick Impact: Two-Thirds Increase in U.S. Vacationers

138,000 tourists came from the USA in August, an increase of 64 percent. “We believe that the strong increase in guests from the USA is also linked to the Boston flight that AUA has been offering since July,” said Walter Strasser of Vienna Tourism. “We rely on air traffic not only as a business location, but also as a tourist location and conference center.” Americans are actually the largest group of guests in the five-star hotels. The major concerts planned for August – Taylor Swift and Coldplay – would also have attracted even more guests to Vienna.

In August, rooms were 81 percent full on average (August 2023: 78 percent), and hotel beds were 64 percent full (August 2023: 61 percent). Year-to-date, room occupancy has increased slightly to around 68 percent and bed occupancy to 52.8 percent.

Twelve million overnight stays since January

Since the beginning of the year, a total of twelve million overnight stays have been registered in Vienna's accommodation establishments. This represents an increase of 10 percent compared to the same period last year, the Vienna Tourism Board announced.
