Air strikes in Syria have begun today amidst all speculations. The attack was virtually imminent as US President Donald Trump was apprehensive of this especially after the recent chemical attack. As of now, US, UK, and France have bombarded multiple targets in Syria. The air strikes targeted alleged chemical weapon storages. According to an official statement by Pentagon, the targeted air strikes pinpointed at a scientific research facility in Damascus, a chemical weapons storage facility which is at the west of Homs along with chemical weapons equipment storage near Homs. Meanwhile, the Syrian State Television has claimed to shot down more than a dozen missiles of the allied forces.
Syria air strikes:
US Donald Trump has told the US citizens, “My fellow Americans, a short time ago, I ordered the United States Armed Forces to launch precision strikes on targets associated with the chemical weapons capabilities of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad. A combined operation with the armed forces of France and the United Kingdom is now underway. We thank them both.” US aircraft including B-1 bombers and ships are used in the attack. Meanwhile, one US Navy warship in the Red Sea also participated in the strikes. As of now, it is not clear whether this is going to be a long-term attack or not.
Defense Secretary James Mattis remarked:
“Right now this is a one-time shot and I believe this is going to send a very strong message to dissuade (Assad), to deter him from doing this again.”The UK Ministry of Defense has said in a statement,” The UK element of the carefully coordinated joint action was contributed by four Royal Air Force Tornado GR4s.” French President Emmanuel Macron too took a hard-hitting stance saying, “The red line set by France in May 2017 has been crossed. So, I ordered the French armed forces to intervene tonight, as part of an international operation in coalition with the United States of America and the United Kingdom and directed against the clandestine chemical arsenal of the Syrian regime.”
British defence secretary says attack ‘highly successful’:
As expected, Russia which happens to be one of the stakeholders in Syria has retorted strongly. Russian Ambassador to US, Antonov in this regard gave an official statement saying, “A pre-designed scenario is being implemented. Again, we are being threatened. We wanted that such actions will not be left without consequences. All responsibility for them rests with Washington, London, and Paris.” Whether Russia approaches an attacking approach or not is a serious question. No doubt, the situation is a complicated and Syrian crisis is further going to be a major concern for the international community.
