Opportunism is something not new in Indian politics. Right from Jawaharlal Nehru, the legacy of political opportunism has been a reality. The curious case of Naresh Agarwal joining BJP from SP has reiterated the same trend. Rajya Sabha MP Naresh Agarwal wasn’t preferred by SP for re-nomination and instead, veteran actress Jaya Bachchan was given the ticket.
Not only the veteran politician has left SP to join BJP but has equated Jaya Bachchan as to a ‘Bollywood dance girl’. Once that remark went viral, Naresh Agarwal received serious flak from several quarters. To BJP’s utter embarrassment, the remark was made at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi in presence of Union Minister Piyush Goyal.
BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra distanced himself from the remark and Union External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted,”Shri Naresh Agarwal has joined Bharatiya Janata Party. He is welcome. However, his comments regarding Jaya Bachchan Ji are improper and unacceptable.”
Political leaders from opposition political parties have strongly condemned such a shameful sexist attack on renowned actress Jaya Bachchan. Incidentally, Naresh Agarwal has got the previous record of using abusing language in the forefront.
Interestingly, in the political number game itself, Naresh Agarwal’s arrival has changed the dynamics in Rajya Sabha among political stalwarts in UP.
Let’s not forget that BJP can only elect eight candidates to Rajya Sabha from UP. As Naresh Agarwal has left SP to join BJP along with his son Nitin Agarwal, who is also an MLA, is definitely going to hurt the opposition.
Now Anil Agarwal, who has been BJP’s candidate, has an outside chance to become Rajya Sabha MP. Thus both SP and BSP are disheartened with the turn of events. If Anil Agarwal somehow wins the Rajya Sabha election, it would be a great occasion for BJP to carry forward the fruits of Yogi Adityanath’s strong governance and pro-active work.
