At the beginning of September, the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden was a guest in Grafenegg with its newly appointed chief conductor Daniele Gatti – the best German orchestra bringing with them the works of Ludwig van Beethoven and Robert Schumann.
Ludwig van Beethoven's Overture to the ballet “The Creatures of Prometheus” is the lively opening. This is followed by an intimate reduction to the essentials: Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto is opened – for the first time in the history of music – by an unaccompanied solo instrument alone. The first movement begins with a delicate lyrical tone, before revealing as it progresses the full drama and technical virtuosity of the mature Beethoven. The solo part is in the hands of festival director Rudolf Buchbinder, who has always been closely acquainted with Beethoven's piano works. After the intermission, Robert Schumann's passionate Fourth Symphony appears on the program. The new husband announced in advance: “My next symphony will really be called Clara,” and he completed the first version on his wife's 22nd birthday in September 1841.
