Andreas Vogel and Wolfgang Stroh were able to find the comet low on the Thalheim horizon near Wels on Friday, October 11, 2024, around 7 p.m.
Andreas Vogel:
The comet can easily be found low on the horizon around 7pm using binoculars. It was also very clearly visible in the Skywatcher Startravel-102/500 large-field “comet finder” refractor. However, we could not see the tail. The comet had the visible impression of a faint star with a pronounced coma. Weather conditions were not ideal and the comet was, as expected, very low on the horizon. Although we found occasional gaps in the clouds through which we could clearly see the comet, there were additional occulting clouds behind it that affected the contrast. With a lot of imagination, can you see the tail from bottom right to top left in the pictures?
Recording by Andreas Vogel: 7pm with Nikon D750 and Samyang 135mm. Exposure time was 1/40 second at F2 and ISO 400.
Wolfgang Stroh recording: . The image of the comet was taken at 7:03 p.m., with a Panasonic Lumix G9, ISO 800, 1/5 second, aperture 5.6, 280 mm (KB equivalent).
