Yes It is the latest installment in the Ys series and sends popular protagonist Adol Christin on a new adventure. Adol is the main character in the Ys titles, but each game is self-contained, so it's not necessary to have played one of the previous games – although I recommend that. The basis of the games is Adol Christine's diary, which he wrote during his adventures. Part X is arranged chronologically Ys II: Old Ys Has Disappeared – Final Chapter And yes: memories of Celestia.
The story follows Adol and new protagonist Karja Balta. Adol and his companions are stranded in the northern lands of Obelia Bay after their ship is attacked by pirates. Through unfortunate circumstances, a mysterious female voice, and an army of undead, Adol is magically handcuffed to the pirate princess Karja. With the help of the Balta Navy, the two founders set out to sea and try to find a solution.
Difficult entry
To be honest, I'm with her Yes Something difficult. Even after playing for several hours, I wasn't really excited about the title. Even though I know and are used to Adol as the protagonist of the Ys games, I find it difficult to have Karja as the second protagonist. As arrogant and arrogant as she was to begin with, she was simply frustrated with me from the beginning. Although she is going through a phase of character development, unfortunately it does not get her out of the hole she fell into. Therefore, I preferred to play as Adol, even though you can switch between him and Karja as a controllable character.
Combat system: dynamic and cooperative
However, I have to say that I liked the ground combat system. Thanks to today's technology, loading times for battles are a thing of the past. Enemies roam freely around the map, and we can directly attack them, defeat them, and continue running. We can fight with Adol or Karga. They both have strengths and weaknesses, but they can also attack together. Thanks to the shackles, their mana is linked together and we can activate this link to make them attack at the same time. However, this also limits mobility compared to one-on-one combat. The boss battles are actually quite diverse, and the combination of duo and solo provides a good range of options for approaching battles.
Battles on the water are less successful because they offer little variety and quickly become monotonous. Maybe that's because I'm not a fan of these gameplay elements in general. But there are games that implement naval battles better and more exciting. Especially considering that we have a pirate princess by our side in Karja and the heavy focus on Nordic themes, there were definitely ways to make playing on the water more exciting. However, it is interesting to see how the ship is gradually being improved and upgraded.
The graphics are impressive too. It has the typical JRPG charm, but the animation is much better compared to its predecessors. However, I had to get used to Adol's appearance. Since the story takes place after Ys II, Adol joins Yes He is about 17 years old, but looks much older with his angular face. It bothered me a little at first. I must also pay tribute to the fact that Nordics runs very stable on PC. I barely noticed frame drops, and the mouse and keyboard controls are good, though I prefer playing RPGs with a controller. Here I can easily DualSense royal PlayStation 5 is used. I'm glad that the developers also have PC players in mind, as many JRPGs are still developed primarily for consoles. However, the HDR function in Nordic countries is very poor. It's really overexposure, you can't do it yourself.
Unfortunately there is no German translation yet
Unfortunately, Yes does not follow the trend of translation into other languages. While the character has since Personality 5 It also finally offers German texts, but unfortunately this does not apply to the Ys franchise. There are also other JRPG series, which unfortunately mostly only have English text. The English audio output is good, but if you want, you can also use the Japanese audio. This is completely up to you and what your preferences are.
Conclusion on Ys X: Nordic countries
Definitely one of the weakest parts of the series, even if everything is solid. However, since Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA, the Y titles no longer really convince me. Even though I don't deal with the franchise as intensely as I do the Tales of or Atelier games, I still noticed that the franchise was really weak with Ys IX: Monstrum Nox, even though I liked that title even more. Yes. Since Adol probably wrote more memoirs, we will definitely see Ys XI. Then it will become clear how the franchise develops in the future – or whether it is better to draw a line in the sand.
