‘Efforts to separate are not acceptable’

Bosnia and Herzegovina’s top representative Christian Schmidt strongly condemned Friday’s actions. “Extremist political activities and rhetoric of the past few days threaten stability in Bosnia and Herzegovina and undermine the prospects of all citizens, including those in Republika Srpska,” he said, broadcast from his office on Monday. Leadership requires common sense and a willingness to engage in constructive dialogue.

In the row over the unity of Bosnia and Herzegovina, German Foreign Minister Annalina Barbuk spoke in favor of imposing sanctions on Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik. Barbuk (the Greens) said Monday in Brussels after talks with their EU colleagues that the situation in the Balkan country is worrying.

“Efforts to separate are not acceptable.” That is why she called for “the use of the current sanctions regime against Mr. Dodik”. This leads to greater independence of the Autonomous Serbian Republic. In mid-November, Berbuk’s predecessor Heiko Maas (Social Democratic Party) spoke in favor of sanctions.
