Apple just released an update to macOS Big Sur via a software update to fix the bug that the company introduced with the latest Big Sur update: On 5/16/2022, Apple released version 11.6. Attachments can be opened from email programs such as Apple’s Mail app if the attachment viewer is already open. For example, if the Preview app is already open, the Mail app can no longer open an image attachment in the Preview app. Microsoft Outlook is also affected by this issue.
About a month later, Apple fixed the problem in the form of macOS 11.6.7: the new update aims to correct this bug introduced with 11.6. The error described above does not occur on macOS 10.15 Catalina or macOS 12 Monterey.

If you want to get rid of the error immediately, open the system settings for installation. The update can be downloaded and installed in the “Software Update” section. But be warned: even installing small bug fix updates takes between 20 and 45 minutes – depending on the Mac you’re using. During this time the Mac cannot be used.
