YouTube tests premium exclusives for 4K video resolution

Subscription limit starts at 1,440 pixels

Source: Reddit

According to a Reddit user report, YouTube is currently testing the subscription limit for 4K resolution for videos. For full resolution, please upgrade to YouTube Premium. No official statement has been issued in this regard yet.

Currently, YouTube appears to be running A/B testing on the video platform, which will no longer allow specific users without a premium subscription to select the highest resolution. In such cases, the resolution menu says 2160p or 4K Premium feature he is. The same probably also applies to 8K, i.e. 4,320 pixels. Apparently, the test is only performed on iOS devices.

With this step, YouTube will likely try to sell more YouTube Premium subscriptions. So far, the subscription offers the following features: ad-free videos, offline videos and background playback, and YouTube Music Premium. In Germany it costs 11.99 € per month or 119.99 euros per year. Alternatively, there is a family tariff (€17.99/month) and a student tariff (€6.99/month) to choose from.

Changes to the platform have been criticized many times in the past, for example when a file hate advertising It was removed or additional ads were introduced before the videos. Complaints about the solution’s opt-in barrier testing are already piling up on Twitter and Reddit. It’s unclear if Google will actually implement the change. YouTube has not yet commented on this.
