Microsoft’s Xbox becomes ‘first console to offer carbon-sensitive game updates and downloads’
Company reports. To make this possible, console owners are given new power saving options. This requires an update, which will initially be provided to participants Xbox Insider Program Available. This program provides players with the opportunity to test the latest system updates and features that are still under development.
However, soon, all users should be able to set the new power saving options. Current generation Xbox Series X/S models are supported, but so are Xbox One consoles.

“If regional carbon footprint data is available in the area, and the controller is plugged in and online, it will check when grid power from low-emission sources is maximized during the overnight maintenance window. Then it will schedule any updates during that time frame. This reduces reliance on fossil fuels, reduces carbon dioxide emissions and can even save users money.”
The Xbox should then update not at a random time between 2am and 6am, but when “as much renewable energy as possible is available in your power grid,” it says.
New energy saving options in detail
Added “Off” power saving mode on Xbox Series X/S consoles. This is to reduce power consumption while the console is turned off. According to the developers, the update will not affect performance, gameplay, or downloads of system and game updates overnight.
Another option is Idle Hours. Setting this power option allows you to set a time period for the console to sleep with standby. During the predetermined time, the console should boot faster and be available for remote updates. When the activity hours are over, the console turns off completely and should only consume 0.5 watts instead of 10-15 watts when active.
On Xbox Series X/S, activity hours should activate automatically. The basis of the settings is the calculation of the times when the console was previously active.
Xbox One users must configure active hours themselves. The default here is “always active”.
