Compact Navi 31 chip: Potential test vehicle for the Radeon RX 7800 series

After there was supposedly a picture of the Navi-32 package with GCD and four MCDs a few days ago Moore’s Law is dead He posted a video of the GPU package in one of his videos, which shows the Navi 31 chip in a smaller package.

We still see a GCD of around 308mm² and six MCDs, of which only four are said to be active. According to the link, AMD has been sending these prototypes to its board partners for months. The purpose of the smaller 40 x 40 mm package should be that the mid-range card platform can actually be developed and tested here. This includes PCB design and heatsink design.

The need for the smaller Navi 31 package is said to be due to the fact that the Navi 32 package is not yet complete or is only available now.

Since we can now be sure that the Radeon RX 7800 (XT) will have 16GB of graphics memory, AMD cuts the Navi 31 prototype down to 256-bits using only four active MCDs and the aforementioned 16GB of graphics memory. With four MCDs, the Infinity Cache also comes to an assumed 64MB.

AMD could also use a more compact Navi 31 prototype to launch the Radeon RX 7900M XTX. According to Moore’s Dead Law, AMD is also said to be working on it, but it is not clear if such a product will eventually appear.

It is still not known when the Radeon RX 7800 series will appear. Lisa Su recently confirmed the corresponding plans without specific information.
