Apple iPhone 15 Pro: OLED displays with smaller bezels

According to reports, Apple wants to install frameless displays in its upcoming iPhones and has already ordered corresponding frameless panels from its OLED suppliers Samsung Display and LG Display. However, the plan consists of two phases. For the first time, Apple wants to reduce the bezels of this year’s iPhone 15 Pro models. Later, and maybe we’ll talk about it a few years later, Apple wants to introduce full screen displays. This means that there is no longer a camera cutout and the thinnest frame possible.

However, there are currently still some critical hurdles to Apple’s frameless plans. One of them is the Under Display Camera (UDC). Currently, the iPhone 15 Pro’s bezel is not thin enough to accommodate an under-display camera. Added to this is the thin-film (TFE) encapsulation, which protects the OLEDs from moisture and oxygen. It is made by laminating an inorganic film and an organic film. The inorganic film blocks moisture and oxygen while the organic film blocks voids in the inorganic film.

The third problem is that Apple is interested in keeping the iPhone’s flat screen. This makes it difficult to bend the screen circle at the bottom edge of the screen. According to reports, Apple also does not want to install curved screens on the iPhone 15 Pro because it has a magnifying glass effect on the edges. Californians also assume that curved displays break more easily.

These are all challenges for Apple display vendors that need to be resolved first. On the contrary, it means that a truly bezel-less iPhone will be years away. Apple is said to be finally planning a periscope telephoto lens and bigger batteries for this year.
