world of With CSAIL (MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory) has developed a new way to more easily customize 3D models for 3D printing. With the help of artificial intelligence (AI), models are automatically divided into functional and design parts. This allows users to customize the design without affecting functionality.
Until now, it has been difficult to modify someone else’s custom models for 3D printing. If forms are edited globally, functionality cannot be guaranteed when printed. So MIT researchers analyzed 1,000 templates from the Thingiverse online platform and discovered which parts are important for this function.
From these results, they developed a semi-automated approach to segment 3D models into functional and design segments. External functional parts that interact with the environment are recognized, as well as internal functional connections between components.
Tests have shown that function-oriented partitioning helps preserve functionality when customizing, especially in more complex models. With Style2Fab, the researchers introduced a system that can adapt design elements based on the new method without affecting functionality.
