Strabag Canada Subway Expansion

Vienna / Toronto (A / CAN) Listed construction group Strabag received a tunneling contract as part of the Scarborough Subway Extension (Line 2) in Toronto through its Canadian subsidiary. The project, which has a cost of around 500 million euros (757 million Canadian dollars), has been floated as a design, building and financing model. Work will start in May and be completed by fall 2024

“This request is part of a series of large infrastructure measures that we are carrying out in Toronto. We are delighted that we were able to score again thanks to our experience in tunneling, which we are currently using also in a railway pumping station and tunnel,” explains Thomas Bertel, CEO of Strabag. The contract model creates an added value for the province
Strabag received the contract from Infrastructure Ontario and Metrolinx as part of its public procurement process. The evaluation criteria include the design and build methodology, the project management approach and the collaborative behavior of the key people on the team.

The extension will be fully 7.8 km underground. It will connect the former station at Kennedy Station with Shepherd Street / Macawan Road. The order includes a starting pole, a receiving pole, five end walls for future stations and 14 end walls of rescue poles. Tunnel boring machine with diameter of 11.87m is used for tunneling.
