The Austrian women’s hockey team started the European Indoor Championships in Hamburg on Wednesday with two clear defeats. First, the energetic Dutch women lived up to their role as favorites with 7:0 (3:0), then the ÖHV selection had to bow out to host Germany clearly with 0:8 (0:3).
Other competitors in the group selected by coach Corinna Zerbes are the Czech Republic, Ukraine and Turkey. After two matches, Germany, the Netherlands and Ukraine topped the table with two wins each. In the case of the “Red Foxes”, the dream of a medal continues despite two bankruptcies in front of the top favourites.
“The girls are excited. Of course, the goal is for us to finish third or fourth, so that we have that medal final, for third place,” Zerbes said. ÖHV player Marta Lajnja rated the defeats realistically: “These were two favorites for the title. Now the important games for us have begun.
The ÖHV Women’s match against the Czech Republic is scheduled for Thursday. Before that, the hockey guys, European champions 2018 and runners-up European 2020, will also start the tournament against Switzerland, and in the evening Michael Korber & Co. will play against Belgium.
