Leon Goretzka is at his lowest point in his career.
For years, there was no way around the 29-year-old from Bochum in Bayern Munich's midfield.
After the central midfielder suffered his first bitter blow by not being called up to Germany's European Championship squad, the misery of the 57-times Germany record champion now looks set to continue.
Even in his parent club's 6-1 win on matchday 3 of the Bundesliga (all the info >>>), Goretzka's services were not required – his Germany teammate Joshua Kimmich and newcomer Joao Palhinha dominated the midfield from the start and found themselves on the bench youngster Aleksandar Pavlovic and ÖFB ace Konrad Laimerplatz.
Eberle: “We communicated clearly from the beginning”
It's not the first time Goretzka has been left out of the squad under new coach Vincent Kompany – he wasn't in the squad for the first round of the DFB Cup, and in the clash with Wolfsburg he was on the bench for over 90 minutes. Goretzka made his first and only appearance so far this season against SC Freiburg.
Bayern's sporting director then commented on the current situation of the reserve player to Sky: “I like him very much, even if of course he is angry at the moment. I understand that too. But that is also part of football life,” says Eberl, offering an insight into his pupil's predicament.
“We made it clear from the start that we would have a very balanced squad. Lyon already knew that we had a player in Alex Pavlovic who was now a national player and that we would now move on to Palinia,” explains Eberl. Goretzka knew what was coming. “Then the competitive situation at Bayern is fantastic.”
On Säbener Straße, they wanted to sell the highest-earning player Goretzka in the last transfer summer – but Goretzka apparently did not want to know anything about his commitment to the big Turkish club Galatasaray Istanbul (all information >>>). His contract with Munich runs until 2026.
