The first two wildcards at next week’s ATP 500 tournament at Wiener Stadthalle were awarded to Austrians Jorg Rodionov and Philip Misolek on Thursday. The third is still open. Rodionov surprised at the Erste Bank Open two years ago with his first victory over Denis Shapovalov. On the other hand, the amazing Kitzbühel Misolic is giving its premiere in Vienna.
“I’m really happy to be able to play in front of my home fans again. It’s always an extra motivation for me. Getting this allowance means a lot to me,” said the 21-year-old.
Rodionov hopes for another surprise
Rodionov, who is two years older than him, is looking for another surprise in the strong field of co-stars with Dominic Thiem, Andrei Rublio (Russia) and Taylor Fritz (USA). “I start with good memories and I will do my best to sell myself as best I can,” said Rodionov, the best Austrian team 128th in the world.
The draw for the main competition for the €2.5m tournament will take place on Saturday at Heumarkt. On Friday, Misolic and some of the stars of the tournament will participate in a mini-tie-breaker tournament at the ice skating club’s headquarters.
