Salzburg will meet European heavyweights in the round of 16 of the Champions League in the club’s history. The seven potential contenders are Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Juventus Turin and Ajax Amsterdam totaling more than half of all titles awarded so far in the Champions League or previous tournament title.
With the exception of ManCity, which has yet to win the important European club competition, all other potential contenders are champions at least twice. One of these six clubs has won 34 of the 66 seasons played in the Championship or Champions League so far.
The record winner is Real Madrid, the club of Austrian FA star David Alaba, with 13 victories, six of them in the Championship Cup and seven in the Champions League in 1992.
The Round of 16 matches will take place on Monday (12pm) at the UEFA headquarters in Nyon. As the group runner-up, Salzburg will play the first leg at home. The game dates are 15/16. or 22/23. February. In the second leg, the group winners have their home rights, so Salzburg must play away from home. The decision on boarding will be made on 8/9. or 15./16. March.
