Trump wants to stop release of tax documents with emergency application

In a legal conflict related to the release of tax documents, former US President Donald Trump has now appealed to the country’s Supreme Court. Trump’s lawyers filed an emergency petition in the Supreme Court in Washington.

Last week, an appeals court in Washington allowed Trump’s tax records to be turned over to a House committee starting Thursday. Trump has already opposed it in recent years in fewer cases.

The Treasury Department in the administration of Trump’s successor, Joe Biden, last year instructed the IRS to hand over the documents to the group. Contrary to political custom in the United States, real estate mogul Trump has not made his tax returns public either as a presidential candidate or after moving to the White House. To this day he tries to prevent disclosure. So critics suspect he has something to hide. Trump, on the other hand, has argued that the Democratic Party’s dominant group wants to see his tax records for political reasons.

The former president had asked an appeals court in Washington to stop the release of the documents. The court already rejected Trump’s application in August, thereby upholding the lower court’s decision. The former president later sought a reconsideration, which was later denied last week. As a result, he had to go to the Supreme Court.

A new House of Representatives will be elected in the United States on November 8. Trump may hope that if Republicans win a majority in the House of Congress, the committee under new leadership will refrain from subpoenaing the documents. The new Congress will convene in early January 2023.
