UEFA is considering the possibility of expanding EM to 32 teams

According to a media report, UEFA is considering a possible expansion of the European Championship from 24 to 32 teams from 2028. The Associated Press reported on Sunday that the continental confederation has begun a feasibility review.

The review of the EM format is part of the bidding process to host the European Championship in seven years. The host will be decided at the end of 2023. The next European Championship will be held in Germany in 2024, with the participation of 24 teams, as in 2016 and this year.

32 out of 55 teams won tickets to the European Championship finals

If there is an expansion to 32 teams, more than half of UEFA’s 55 member associations will be initially. The current format has been repeatedly criticized because of the six groups, each with four teams, four third-placed teams advance to the Round of 16.

This led to waiting periods for third parties during which they did not know whether or not they were in the knockout round. The Executive Committee will have to take a decision on expanding the circle of executive management. The World Cup stadium has recently been expanded. In Qatar, there will be 32 teams next year, as in the past. There are 48 teams in the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
