A refueling error led to the retirement of Marco Wittmann/DTM

BMW has now confirmed that Marco Wittmann's dramatic failure in the first DTM race at Oschersleben was due to a refueling error by Schubert Motorsport.

It was an exciting final stage in the first DTM race of the season at Oschersleben. Thanks to a lucky strategy, Marco Wittmann moved from 19th on the grid to the front of the DTM field before Schubert Motorsport's BMW M4 GT3 sped off four minutes from the end of the race.

Due to the lack of fuel pressure, the BMW lost speed before the car finally came to a stop and was idle. A shocker for the BMW Racing Team in their home match at the Motorsport Arena.

The failure was caused by a fueling error by the BMW team before the race.

“We analyzed the situation and decided that it was a mistake during refueling. “Of course we are very upset, but that is the case now and tomorrow is a new day,” Björn Lillemann, Head of BMW M Customer Racing, tells Motorsport-Total.com.

There wasn't enough fuel in the BMW M4 GT3's tank for the one-hour race! Had it not been for the longer neutralization following Bendor's retirement in the McLaren 720S GT3, the green Schaeffler-designed BMW would have been retired sooner!
