STRASBOURG – The European Union Parliament agreed to ease environmental standards in agriculture in Strasbourg on Wednesday. The new regulations were adopted in a hasty procedure without an impact assessment: the EU Commission proposed lowering the standards only in mid-March, and at the end of March the EU countries in the Council gave their blessing. This primarily affects the fallow land and crop rotation requirements that farmers must adhere to in order to receive EU agricultural subsidies.
