In Hong Kong, the pro-democracy Apple Daily has stopped. She was targeted for alleged violations of the controversial Hong Kong Security Law. The newspaper had already halted some of its shows in the past few days.

Several executives from Apple Daily were arrested last week. Editor-in-chief Ryan Low and editor-in-chief Kim Hong have been charged and are now in custody. According to the police, there is strong evidence that more than 30 articles published in the “Apple Daily” were aimed at persuading other countries to impose sanctions on China and Hong Kong. There was talk of a “conspiracy with foreign countries”. The newspaper’s assets have also been frozen.
The newspaper’s founder, Jimmy Lai, had already been arrested in August. The 73-year-old is currently serving a 20-month prison sentence for inciting unauthorized protests. He is also under investigation for alleged violations of the security law that Beijing introduced a year ago in response to the ongoing mass demonstrations for more democracy in the Chinese Special Administrative Region.
Dozens of people arrested in Hong Kong are still on trial on charges under the Security Act, which is as mysterious as it is far-reaching. A good number of Hong Kong activists have fled to other countries for fear of prosecution.
