Company History
The company was started in 1970 by Tech giant Siemens was established Diode production facility in Villach. Since then, the Carinthian production site has become an essential part of today’s Infineon Technologies. Already in the seventies to the eighties, the site was repeatedly expanded and in 1997 to Global Efficiency Center for Power Electronics Absolutely.
After expanding the Austrian presence by Development centers in Graz (1998) and Linz (1999) Siemens’ semiconductor division has become 1999 sprang up and became Infineon Technologies. The Infineon Group went public in 2000 and has been listed on the German Stock Exchange since then (ISIN DE0006231004).
In addition to the three branches in Villach, Graz and Linz, which are constantly expanding, Infineon Technologies Austria expanded in the 2000s Locations in Klagenfurt, Bucharest (Romania), Colim (Malaysia) and Vienna expanded.
Today there is more on the Villach website Specialty centers for contactless technologies, silicon carbide and gallium nitride as well as part of Industrial Electronics Headquarters and headquarters of Infineon Technologies Austria AG.
CEO of Infineon Technologies Austria AG in Villach since 2014 Sabine Herlichka. The current CEO of the German parent company, Infineon Technologies AG, is Jochen Hanebeck.
With 4,820 employees – 2,100 of them in research and development – from 73 countries, Infineon Technologies Austria generated sales of approximately €3.9 billion in fiscal year 2021. A €516 million research effort brings Infineon Austria close One of the most search-intensive companies in Austria.

Headquarters, production and development of power electronics in Villach
The Villach site, originally designed by Siemens as a purely production site, now serves as the headquarters for Infineon Technologies Austria AG and is involved in the corporate sectors of production, IT management and research and development.
The manufacturing capabilities of the Villach Infineon complex cover the production of chips of various sizes, and Infineon currently operates two chip plants at the Carinthian site. On the other hand, the Villach plant was established at the beginning of the Austrian existence for the production of diode, which is now used for the manufacture of chips with a capacity of 200 mm. On the other hand, the 300 mm wafer plant was completed in 2021 with an investment of 1.6 billion euros.
Research facilities located in Villach include a center for microelectronics development, world-class efficiency centers for power electronics and new types of semiconductor materials. The main task of the research block is to combine these areas in order to design chips that are as energy efficient as possible.
High Frequency Technology in Linz
1999 in collaboration with Johannes Kepler University was established The location is in Linz day one Development Center for High Frequency Semiconductor Components. These components are primarily used by driver assistance systems And the Radar Technologies. The research center has been owned by Infineon alone since 2019.
Within the scope of certain application areas, Linz’s research team is also working on products for mobile And the guidance, including a receiving amplifier that can however enable high data rates when reception is poor. The 77-GHz radar chip made of silicon and germanium technology, launched in 2009, is the crown jewel of the Linz research facility, with sales figures exceeding 250 million units.
Contactless search in Graz
The Graz facility, established in 1998, is a subsidiary of the Infineon Group Global Competence Center for Contactless Technologies And since 2021 too Competence Center for Industrial Microcontrollers.
In addition to optical components distance measurement in vehicles and 3D Image Sensor Chips Moreover Near Field Communication (NFC) Chips To transmit data securely over short distances. NFC technology is used, among other things, for simple and secure contactless payment transactions. This chip is installed in almost every new ATM or credit card, as well as in most smartphones of the new generations.
