Interior Minister Gerhard Karner met with German Interior Minister Nancy Weisser and Polish Interior Minister Tomasz Szymoniak for working discussions in Berlin on 21 July 2024. Topics included close cooperation in the fight against illegal immigration. The particular focus was on implementing the EU Charter on Asylum and Migration as well as protecting external borders, combating the exploitation of migration by countries such as Russia and cooperating with third countries.

Interior Minister Gerhard Karner: “Germany and Austria work closely together in the field of security, as demonstrated by the deployment of more than 40 police officers at the European Football Championship. I therefore welcome the German initiative to deport Afghans after serious crimes… “We are making full use of the protection granted them in Europe. I have begun discussing this with European Interior Ministers in Brussels. In Germany, we have obtained a strong partner for this important project.”

Like Austria, Poland is part of the initiative of the 15 EU member states, which in a letter to the EU Commission called for new opportunities for cooperation with third countries. Interior Minister Karner and German Interior Minister Weiser also wish to continue working closely together on the issue of deportation to Afghanistan. The ministers then met with Austrian police officers present at the European Championship match between Austria and Poland.
