Japan: Charging electric cars at red lights

In the Kashiwanoha Smart City Model City, where intelligent transportation systems are regularly tested, Tokyo and Chiba universities as well as the Ministry of Transport are working on this new project. According to a statement issued by the University of Tokyo, the charging coils are embedded in the road surface in front of traffic lights.

Special devices installed on electric cars near the tires can be used to draw power once the vehicles slow down. According to scientists, ten seconds of power consumption provides a range of about one kilometre. With just one minute of waiting, you can achieve a good additional range of six kilometres. This doesn’t sound like much, but it can be useful in stop-and-go urban traffic.
