Job vacancies rose in the second quarter to a record level

The number of job vacancies again reached the highest level in the second quarter. More than half of all vacancies are in the service sector.

The number of vacancies reached a new record high of 206,300 in the second quarter. After 138,600 vacancies in the same period the previous year, quarterly figures since then have shown a sharp increase. In previous years, the number of vacancies was much less than it is now. This is shown by the data from Austria stats Thursday.

More than half of all vacancies – 124,800 – are in the service sector. The manufacturing and public sector sectors make up the rest of the record total with 52,400 and 29,100 vacant jobs respectively. The vacancy rate, which was almost always between 1 and 3 percent from 2009 to 2020, increased to 4.8 percent in the second quarter of 2022. This rate relates to the number of people employed.

131,900 vacancies were reported to AMS for the second quarter of 2022. The Austrian Statistics Authority figures are calculated by means of inter-company surveys, and therefore also include jobs that are not reported to AMS by firms.
