Northern lights possible again on Friday – 5 minutes

At the beginning of November, the night sky shone with bright colours, as the northern lights could be seen over Austria. According to expectations, the matter could happen again tomorrow, Friday.

This may be caused by a powerful M9.8 solar flare that occurred on Wednesday evening. When there is strong solar activity, so-called “coronal mass ejections” frequently occur, in which electrically charged particles from the solar wind hit the Earth’s atmosphere. As a result, they release energy in the form of light. The northern lights are not uncommon, especially in the northern regions of the world. In this country they occur only when the solar wind is strongest.

Will the northern lights shine again?

But to actually be able to see the northern lights in the skies over Austria again, this time you’ll need a big dose of luck. According to media reports, the northern lights will likely be visible in the early hours of Friday morning when it is still dark. It is also possible to see it in the evening, most likely in the Danube region and in the southeast. However, heavy clouds are expected to obscure the view of the sky.

The northern lights lit up the night sky

This special landscape could already be seen in the sky at the beginning of November. The pink northern lights lit up the night. We have received many photos, especially from Carinthia and Styria, and several 5-minute readers managed to capture this phenomenon on camera. They have been spotted, among other places, over Villach, Velden, Spital, Rosenthal and even in the Deutschlandsberg and Weise areas of Styria. Here is a small selection:
