ÖFB player Xaver Schlager joins RB Leipzig

Schlager could replace compatriot Konrad Laimer in Leipzig. According to various media, the midfielder wants to leave the club. Laimer has been linked with Bayern Munich and Manchester United for some time.

“RB Leipzig is a big club in Germany that constantly wants to play at international level and has now won its first DFB Cup. So I am very happy that the change has been implemented and I can develop more here,” Schlager was quoted as saying by his new employer. His sporting director Christopher Fifell saw the new signing as “a strong attacking midfielder and intense running player, who not only knows our game philosophy, but has internalized it over the years. Xaver will enrich us both on and off the field.”

Schlager had to endure serious injuries twice during his time at Wolfsburg. He broke his ankle first in 2019, then in August 2021 a cruciate ligament tear was added of all things in the match against Leipzig. He celebrated his comeback only at the beginning of March. In his three years in the green and white shirt, he made 81 competitive matches, scoring three goals and nine assists.
