The Congress Party has decided to launch a Satyagraha along with other opposition parties in the state of Gujarat on September 1. The march is a protest against the attacks on tribals in the state. Congress party is trying to garner the support of tribals and Patidar with this satyagraha and appeasement. Gujarat is going to have elections by the end of this year.
So, Congress is planning to consolidate its vote bank by expressing solidarity with the victims among the tribals in Gujarat. Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi and Party Vice-President Rahul Gandhi are going to lead the satyagraha against BJP rule in Gujarat.
One of the Congress leaders has shared with the media that invitations have been sent to various leaders in the opposition parties to join the Satyagraha and prove their unity. However, the support of other opposition parties is just for a show and for influencing the voters psychologically. Except for BJP and Congress, the other opposition parties hardly have many shares worth considering. Around 85% of the votes are shared between the BJP and Congress.
Sharad Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Janata Dal United (JD-U)have a combined vote share of 2% which is quite negligible. However, NCP doesn’t seem to gel well with the Congress. They haven’t sent a party representative to the Joint Opposition strategy meeting chaired by Sonia Gandhi yesterday. Based on all these points, Congress Satyagraha may become only a visual spectacle, but may not benefit the society or the nation.
