Beijing sees a meeting at such a high political level as a departure from the principle of one-China policy, which not only the US but also Germany recognizes. The United States is the most important ally of democratically organized Taiwan. Relations between Washington and Beijing have deteriorated significantly recently.

A vessel belonging to the Maritime Security Administration of China’s Fujian Province is patrolling the central and northern parts of the Taiwan Strait, Chinese state media reported on Wednesday.

The Taiwanese president arrived in Los Angeles on Tuesday evening on his way back from a visit to Central America. His office said in a statement that his experts briefed him on the regional situation. Taiwan has so far reported no unusual Chinese military movements ahead of the meeting with US Republican McCarthy.
