China has threatened to retaliate if the two leaders meet and hold talks. The People’s Republic of Taiwan considers Taiwan a breakaway province.

In August 2022, after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taipei, China conducted extensive military maneuvers around the island. Beijing sees a meeting at such a high political level as a departure from the principle of one-China policy, which not only the US but also Germany recognizes. The United States is the most important ally of democratically organized Taiwan. Relations between Washington and Beijing have deteriorated significantly recently.

The Taiwanese president arrived in Los Angeles on Tuesday evening on his way back from a visit to Central America. His office said in a statement that his experts briefed him on the regional situation. Taiwan has so far reported no unusual Chinese military movements ahead of the meeting with US Republican McCarthy.
