A week after the prestige victory over FC St. Pauli, Hamburger SV stumbled into the second Bundesliga at 1. FC Magdeburg. Coach Tim Walter’s team lost 2: 3 (1: 1) to the promoted team, and promotion is in grave danger.
In front of 27,050 spectators in a sold-out arena, Moritz Quarting (32 minutes), Paris Atik (74) and Tatsuya Ito (86 minutes) scored for the hosts, Sonny Keitel (42 minutes) in the meantime. Ludovit Reis made the connection again (90+4).
HSV are now four points off the direct promotion places, and second in the table Heidenheim have a much better goal difference. Magdeburg has risen to 10th place and can plan to move nine points above the relegation classification for next second-tier season.
Lots of chances in the first round
After a slow initial phase without chances, the ball was twice in Magdeburg’s goal in a very short time. However, Moritz Heyer (19th) was offside before HSV’s supposed opening goal was ruled out by Jonas David (20th) after video evidence.
On the other hand, Magdeburg’s Mohamed El-Hankouri (23) capitulated in front of HSV goalkeeper Daniel Hoyer Fernandez, and shortly afterwards Corting performed better against his former club. Hamburg responded immediately: Jean-Luc Dombey and Bikiri Gata (35) failed by a double chance before Keitel equalized.
The penalty was withdrawn due to HSV
After the break, HSV again quarreled with VAR, and referee Harm Osmers returned a penalty kick to the guests (51) after video evidence. And it got worse: Magdeburg pulled out decisively with two goals in the final stage.
Hamburg vs. Paderborn, Magdeburg in Heidenheim
Next weekend HSV will welcome fourth-place club SC Paderborn (Friday 5 May 2023 at 6:30pm). With a six-point lead and an even worse goal difference, another defeat could shake up participation in relegation. Magdeburg is a guest at 1. FC Heidenheim two days later (1.30pm).
