Games with free-to-access worlds land in the first two places.

Video games have long transcended children’s rooms and into mainstream society. Games are thriving and have now developed into a giant company. This is also evidenced by the number of best-selling video games, such as One Current ranking from Statista Offers.

The German statistics platform has determined the best-selling games in the world to date (as of February 2023). Minecraft, developed by Swedish programmer Markus “Notch” Persson and his company Mojang, took first place with sales of 238 million. Mojang is now owned by Microsoft.

The second place went to “Grand Theft Auto V” (GTA 5) from Rockstar Games with 175 million units sold. With a production cost of $265 million, the gangster saga is one of the most expensive games of all time. Of course, GTA 5 continues to be a financial success. The game grossed $800 million on its first day, setting a new record. Then the $1 billion mark was broken on the third day, something no video game – or movie – had ever done before. With over $6 billion in revenue, GTA 5 is the highest-grossing audiovisual entertainment product. The puzzle-like video game Tetris comes in at number three. The PC game, which originally came from Russian developer Alexei Paschitnov, has sold around 143 million units worldwide to date (combined sales of EA and Nintendo versions).
