On July 15, a special sight can be observed in the blue sky above Kolbermoor: unusually shaped clouds with a rainbow flash. We asked astronomy and weather expert Markus Dorfberger.

Kolbermore – When reader Christina Charlotte looked up at the sky on Monday, July 15, she was amazed to see something very special. Long, flame-like clouds with a hint of rainbow. She wrote:I saw this over Kolbermoor on Monday afternoon (July 15th). “He looked crazy. Maybe you'll find out what he's supposed to be.”

We asked our astronomer and weather expert Markus Dorfberger, who specializes in everything that happens in the sky during the day and night. He knows the answer:

“This was a classic cirrus cloud, which tends to appear with warm fronts. Since the clouds are at a fairly high altitude, the left part (which looks like a rainbow) appears as a kind of umbrella. There at high altitudes the sunlight is reflected off the ice crystals.
