HAMBURG (SID) – Chelsea’s next setback and their German team manager: Thomas Tuchel’s side started the new Champions League season with a defeat. In the debut of star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the 2021 Serie A champion lost 0-1 (0-1) at Dinamo Zagreb and took the third competitive defeat of this still young season.
Mislav Orsic (13) scored for the Croatian champions, who celebrated their return to the Champions League after a two-year absence. And Chelsea pressed, with German international Kai Havertz in the starting lineup, to equalize with eight minutes of stoppage time in the final stage, but Reece James (85) did not get more than a hit at the post.
London’s other rivals, who were knocked out by last season’s quarter-final winner Real Madrid, are AC Milan and RB Salzburg in the preliminary round Group E. The Blues, who have lost two of their previous six Premier League games, spent around €280m ( £240m) on new players this summer with the support of the new owner.
