53 local innovations selected at the World Expo 2020 in Dubai

From October 2021, “Made in Austria” innovations will be presented at Expo 2020. The iLab at the Austria Pavilion offers a unique platform for this purpose!

Vienna The Austrian Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai, which will take place from October 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022, is not only a pioneer of Austrian innovation thanks to its architecture and materials used, but it also provides space for all aspects of local R&D and creativity.

53 selected innovations that reflect Austrian creativity at iLab – the knowledge platform within the Austria Pavilion – are displayed in the so-called innovation towers, digitally in videos and also through exhibitions. These show how the creativity of companies, creative entrepreneurs and scientists contribute to shaping the future in a positive and sustainable way, according to the Expo slogan “Connecting Minds – Creating the Future”. At the same time, the diversity of the Austrian corporate landscape is evident here: the range ranges from traditional companies to start-ups and SMEs to research institutions.

Eight sets of iLab themes in two stages

The temporary exhibition will be held in two phases, each consisting of four groups. Things are changed after three months. In individual groups, up to seven companies, entrepreneurs and research institutions have the opportunity to present themselves and their work to an international audience of millions in short videos and informative exhibits. Excellent initiatives from Austria are alternately put in the international spotlight at the Expo in Dubai.

From October to December 2021, InnovationTowers will showcase the following topics:

Opening steps

After the pilot installation of Innovation Towers by ZEROS, with the support of two interns from Vorarlberg, the iLab – Towers and Galleries – will be moved to Dubai in May. The construction of the iLab will be carried out in Dubai in August by ZEROS. The towers are made of flexible wooden elements – called “pixels” from the company Bene. Each InnovationTower consists of many individual pixels; When assembled, the towers reach a height of about 3.60 meters. There will be a test run in September before the Expo opens its doors in October.

Nominations by expert jury

The projects were selected in a Call for Projects (C4P) by a high-level expert jury according to their innovative strength, novelty, innovation, future efficacy, usability and usefulness to users. The impact of Austria’s image as a location, the benefits to society and the environment as well as the sustainable development goals were important criteria for the jury. Projects with a particularly strong relevance to the host country or region were nominated again.

The Austria Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai – which has retained its original name although postponed to 2021 – builds on the creative use of digitization and showcases Austrian innovations as part of the exhibition inside the pavilion, sponsored by Ars Electronica Solutions and büro Vienna.
