BAFTA: “Nomadland” wins 4 awards

American film “Nomadland” by Chinese director Chloe Chow won four awards at the British Film Awards (BAFTA). The Road, also a favorite at the Oscars in two weeks, was awarded Best Picture Sunday at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Chow received the Best Director award, and Frances McDormand won the Best Actress award. There was also a camera award.

Other winners in two important categories include the drama “Father” by Florian Zeller and the thrilling comedy “Promising Young” by Emerald Fennell. Anthony Hopkins won the Best Actor award for “The Father”. The film also won a BAFTA Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, while The Most Promising Young Woman won BAFTA Awards for Best Original Screenplay and Outstanding British Film.

Awards ceremony without spectators

The Best Non-English Film Award went to the satirical film “Der Rausch” by Danish director Thomas Winterberg. The BAFTA Award for Best Animated Feature went to Disney and Pixar’s “Soul,” which also won a Film Music Award.

Yoh Jong-yeon of South Korea was awarded Best Supporting Actress for her role in the drama “Minari”. In the men’s category, Daniel Kaluuya was honored for his film “Judas and the Black Christ”.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, a BAFTA recorded pre-broadcast concert was held at Royal Albert Hall without an audience. Prize winners were linked via video. For once, after the death of his grandfather Prince Philip, BAFTA chief Prince William did not make a speech. From 1959 to 1965 Philip himself was president of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.
