Richard Kelly is returning to the mysterious universe of his 2001 cult film “Donnie Darko” with an ambitious new sequel — this time in book form. The filmmaker has spent a decade writing “The Philosophy of Time Travel,” an approximately 800-page novel that expands the original story and could serve as the foundation for multiple future films.
The book is expected to arrive in the fourth quarter of 2026, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of “Donnie Darko” on Oct. 26. A specific release date will be announced later.
‘The Philosophy of Time Travel’ Continues the Donnie Darko Story
Set in 1988, the novel explores the immediate aftermath of Donnie Darko’s death and focuses on the 14 months following the events of the original movie.
“Donnie Darko,” produced by Flower Films, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2001 before Newmarket Films released it theatrically later that year. Jake Gyllenhaal starred as Donnie alongside Jena Malone, Drew Barrymore, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Mary McDonnell, Holmes Osborne, Katharine Ross, Patrick Swayze, Noah Wyle and Seth Rogen.
The film developed a substantial cult following after its initial theatrical run, with its complex treatment of time travel, alternate realities and fate fueling years of fan discussion.
Kelly says the new novel represents the first stage of a much larger sequel plan.
“I’ve kept in touch with all the cast over the years,” Kelly told Variety. “I’m fairly certain they’re aware that I’ve been working on all this stuff, everything, and the sequel is so big that this book starts off in the 14 months after Donnie’s death, and then there is much more narrative material that I’ve been developing where the time jumps 28 years into the future, and there’s a lot of really exciting stuff that happens starting around 2015/2016 and onward after that, so that’s where I started with the sequel.”
Kelly Envisions Animated and Live-Action Donnie Darko Sequels
Kelly’s long-term concept would potentially turn the novel into an animated or motion-capture film before shifting the story decades forward for a live-action sequel.
“This section of the sequel would be animation and then, in theory, should it happen, there would be a gigantic time jump of 28 years or so, and where the actors, should they want to play their roles live and in the flesh, that would be wonderful, too. So we’ll see what happens.”
Kelly, who directed “Southland Tales” in 2006 and “The Box” in 2009, said he has spent more than two decades considering how a true “Donnie Darko” sequel could work. Rights complications and changes involving studios and parent companies have contributed to the lengthy development process.
Original Cast Could Eventually Return
Kelly said reuniting the original cast has long been central to his plans.
“My caveat with doing a real sequel was that I want to reunite the original cast, and I want to take it onto a gigantic scale and that takes time and it has a price tag and it’s hard to pull this off because it’s multiple movies,” Kelly said.
The filmmaker has not formally approached the cast about returning. Instead, he wants “The Philosophy of Time Travel” to effectively function as a pitch for what the expanded franchise could become.
“I never want to put pressure on anyone or make anyone feel like they have to give me an answer,” Kelly said.
Novel Explores the Tangent Universe and Donnie’s Family
“The Philosophy of Time Travel” will use a found-document structure, including alternating material from Donnie’s parents, Rose and Eddie, as they investigate their son’s death.
Kelly said the characters gradually attempt to understand their shared experiences within the “tangent universe” and the strange 28-day period depicted in the original film.
The sequel also reexamines characters whose actions appeared villainous in the movie. According to Kelly, some are forced to confront disturbing behavior that occurred within the shared dreamlike reality while trying to understand what actually happened.
The characters eventually form what Kelly describes as a support group that begins to resemble a cult.
Book Could Launch a Larger Donnie Darko Revival
Range Literary Publishing will release “The Philosophy of Time Travel,” marking the boutique publishing imprint’s first novel.

For Kelly, however, “The Philosophy of Time Travel” represents something more significant: a possible pathway toward finally expanding the “Donnie Darko” story after decades of development.
Whether the novel ultimately leads to animated and live-action films will depend on audience response, the original cast and the marketplace. But after 25 years, Kelly is preparing to reopen the world of “Donnie Darko” and explore what happened after the film’s haunting conclusion.
