Berlin, Brussels There is an important shift in trade policy in the federal government: The president wants to renew talks on a free trade agreement with the United States.
“Germany must make a new effort in a free trade agreement that removes transatlantic trade barriers, boosts prosperity and at the same time protects climate and social policy standards,” Federal Chancellor Wolfgang Schmidt (SPD) writes in a position. The paper, written with SPD foreign policymaker Michael Roth, was first reported by “Spiegel”.
According to a strategic paper, trade crises and supply problems in recent years have underlined how dependent Germany is on raw materials and the markets of authoritarian countries. Trade agreements with liberal democracies could reduce dependence on individual countries and diversify German and European foreign trade.
