Samyang offers the second generation of standard high-speed fixed focal length for full-frame mirrorless cameras with Sony E-mount. The Samyang AF 85mm F1.4 FE II is said to feature above all else faster, more accurate and quieter autofocus. It’s also about 60 grams lighter than the previous model at 509 grams and now comes with a focus hold button and a dedicated switch. The lens is suitable for full-frame and APS-C cameras, the latter resulting in a 35mm equivalent focal length of 128mm.
The optical system of the lens, consisting of 11 lenses, contains four HR (high refraction) elements and one ED element with a particularly low dispersion (extra low dispersion). These should ensure high contrast and accurate resolution. According to Samyang, the improved lens coating results in sharper colors than the previous model introduced in March 2019. Working without an aspherical lens, there are no “onion rings” in the bokeh.
Revised autofocus for The Samyang AF 85mm F1.4 FE II is powered by a linear actuator, which, by reducing vibration and noise, also allows the new lens to be used for video recording. According to Samyang, it also reacts faster than the previous model. The rounding limit is 85 cm (previously 90 cm).
The focus hold button can alternatively be assigned other functions (depending on the camera model used). The new custom switch also allows the focus ring to be used as a slot ring if required.
Weather protection has been improved for recordings under adverse conditions. The rubber lip on the inside and on the bayonet prevents dust, dirt or moisture from getting in.
