Firmware updates for Pansanonic Lumix S5II and S5IIX

Panasonic has announced new firmware for the Lumix S5II and S5IIX full-frame mirrorless cameras. The updates, which will be available starting April 22, include: Camera-to-cloud native integration with Adobe's Frame.io, new “Proxy Video Recording” function, improved real-time AF detection (animal eyes, cars, motorcycles), new “High” mode for the Electronic Stabilization (Video) function plus To the “Pre-recording function” for continuous recordings.

The new firmware makes the cameras compatible with “Adobe Camera to Cloud,” meaning photos and videos can be automatically uploaded, backed up, shared and edited together via the cloud. To do this, they are sent to the Frame.io platform via an Internet connection via Wi-Fi or USB connection, allowing seamless sharing of captured images (JPEG/RAW) and proxy videos. This allows photographers to get real-time feedback and enables collaborative editing by production teams using their preferred software.

With the new “Proxy Video Recording” function, a low-bitrate proxy file is recorded simultaneously during shooting. Recording a proxy file linked to the original video recording allows for faster and smoother data transfer and editing, and is intended to simplify other post-production processes.

The improved real-time AF system expands on the S5II and S5IIX's hybrid AF stage and detects people among multiple subjects. In addition, it has the function of detecting, focusing and following animal eyes, as well as the function of detecting cars and motorcycles.

In addition to Standard mode, High mode is now available for video recordings for the Electronic Stabilization function, which electronically corrects severe camera shake in moving subjects. Perspective distortion correction has also been added to correct distortions that can occur when shooting video with a wide-angle lens. In combination with Active IS technology, more stable recordings of moving subjects can now be achieved.

Another useful innovation is the “SH sequence pre-recording function”, which records sequential recordings before recording begins. In SH PRE mode, the camera initiates continuous shooting as soon as the shutter button is partially pressed and allows continuous shooting until the shutter button is fully pressed.
