Came, saw, and electrified: American trade magazine “Car and Driver” chose the Ford Mustang Mach-E* as the “Electric Car of the Year 2021.” The 100 percent zero-emission SUV is the first car to receive the “Electric Vehicle of the Year Award”. In the competition for the Best Electric Car of the Year award, the Mustang Mach-E beat ten tough competitors to places. For evaluation, the magazine subjected a total of 11 electric cars to demanding tests. The three-week procedure also included a comparison tour of more than 1,600 km during which experts extensively analyzed the everyday qualities of electric vehicles. The test subjects were electric cars that previously scored the highest in the Car and Driver tests.
“The Mustang Mach-E is the perfect vehicle to turn electric mobility skeptics into glowing electric car fans,” explains Sharon Carty, Editor-in-Chief of Car and Driver magazine. “Formensprache und Größe dieses Crossover-Modells wirken sehr vertraut. For the first time ever ‘Electric Car of the Year Award’, the editorial team used the same prestigious criteria of the ’10 Driver and Driver Car Awards’ – and the Ford Mustang Mach – E as their top color match. In addition to exceptionally high driving pleasure, this also includes high quality and demonstrated practicality. Another decisive factor for winning is whether the car in question performs its job better than the competing models. Last but not least, the driving pleasure factor was also included in the overall rating.
Darren Palmer, Ford’s senior manager of electric vehicle batteries, explains: “The Mustang Mach-E shows what we can do compared to other electric vehicles. The Mustang Mach-E is successful on every level: happy customers, good sales, and awards like this prove the strength of our exemplary strategy.” Awards such as the “Electric Vehicle of the Year” title in “Car and Driver” are a great reward to the team that so gladly considered this battery-electric crossover SUV.”
Popular contenders for the award include the Audi e-tron, Kia Niro, Nissan Leaf Plus, Polestar 2, Porsche Taycan 4S PBP, Tesla Model 3 Performance, Tesla Model S Long Range Plus, and Tesla Model Y Performance, and Volkswagen ID.4, and Volvo. Recharge the XC40. The Car and Driver test program consists of measurements, self-driving impressions, and direct comparisons of both the practical utility and entertainment value of the vehicles in question.
Even before the title of “Electric Car of the Year,” the Mustang Mach-E won prestigious awards from the trade press. In the “Editor’s Choice Award” from “Car and Driver”, the car took first place as well as the “Environmentally Friendly Car of the Year Award” from Cars.com and “Utility of the Year” from AutoGuide. It was also named “Green Car of the Year” and won the “Car Buyer’s Award” from Autoweek magazine.
“We could have made a boring car — a car that looked like a vacuum cleaner,” Palmer said. “But we really wanted an electric car with heart and soul. With the Mustang Mach-E we broke the general muck of electric cars. And with the Mustang Mach-E GT and GT Performance Edition, we’re really ahead.”
