It could have been one of the biggest embarrassments in international football, but Manchester United have just managed to avoid total humiliation. Erik Ten Hag's side led 3-0 after 70 minutes in the FA Cup semi-final against Coventry, but still had to concede an equalizer to make it 3-3 and finally prevailed on penalties after scoreless extra time.
After Manchester City reached the final by defeating Chelsea 1-0, everyone expected a Manchester derby in the final, and United initially lived up to expectations. Scott McTominay (23rd), Harry Maguire (45th + 1st) and Bruno Fernandes were supposed to have cleared things up, but suddenly an eighth-place finish in the Championship (2nd in the Premier League) turned up the heat and made it 2-3 in normal time, until… He managed to achieve this. Equalizer from a penalty kick in the 95th minute.
In stoppage time of extra time, the feeling looked perfect, as Coventry made it 4-3, but VAR intervened due to a very poor offside situation and the goal was disallowed. Casemiro initially failed in the shootout, then two Coventry players lost their nerve and former striker Rasmus Hoglund scored the decisive goal in a 4-2 scoreline. United will now face city rivals City in the final on May 25.
