One of the primary cells of creative events in Vienna has been the Augarten Radius for decades. Here in 2004, Friedel Bressel started a Jewish music festival with a focus on klezmer music. It was a time when the avant-garde renewal of klezmer music by musicians like New York-based David Krakauer was at its peak and klezmer music was thriving at festivals, on the radio and on records.
Friedel Bressel addressed this atmosphere with his Klezmore Festival and the Vienna Music Festival was soon expanded to include silent film evenings with live music accompaniment, workshops and lectures.
The 20th edition of this successful festival begins on November 4th, which, according to Friedel Bressel, “wants to create a basis for diverse dialogues in the sense of open and respectful interaction and exchange between people in a thriving multicultural city of the 21st century.”
