Spanish soccer champion Real Madrid suffered a setback in the title race in La Liga but avoided worse damage thanks to national player Toni Kroos. Los Blancos made their way to 2: 2 (0: 1) against Sevilla four days after the Champions League semi-finals and returned to second place in the table despite bitter experience with the video referee.
Brazilian Fernando (22) and former Barcelona professional Ivan Rakitic (78) scored the visitors’ goals, Marco Asensio (67), and scored an own goal by Diego Carlos (90 + 4), who missed a fake Kroos shot, Real. Drawn twice.
In the table, Atletico Madrid (77 points) are still in the lead, followed by Real against Barcelona (both 75), and Sevilla in fourth place (71). We still have three days to play.
The toughest scene of the match was Rakitic’s goal from the penalty spot. Real received a penalty kick in the 74th minute after a foul on striker Karim Benzema, but referee Juan Martinez Monoeira withdrew shortly thereafter. The reason: Before the mistake on Benzema, there was a handball by Real Madrid professional Edir Militao in the penalty area of the royal team. The referee looked at the video footage – and after long hesitation decided a penalty in favor of Sevilla.
