The tragedy: A boarding school collapsed, and the student died under the rubble

A student died under the rubble when a boarding school building collapsed in Romania on Monday. This was reported by the media, citing the rescue team. She added that the building suddenly collapsed for reasons that are still unclear. Another student was buried in mortal danger. Two other students were slightly injured. There were four teenagers between the ages of 15 and 17 under the rubble. District Governor Noemi Zorgo explained that canal works near the old building may have caused the collapse.

The institution belongs to the regionally famous state high school “Tamasi Aron”, founded by Jesuits in the 16th century in Odorheiu Secuiesc, Transylvania, where the majority of ethnic Hungarians live. The school building was considered low risk in the event of an earthquake, but has recently been partially renovated. The boarding school was built at the beginning of the 20th century and, according to Governor Zorgu, had a proper operating license. It has not been verified whether there is a risk of earthquakes here. It is owned by the Catholic Church and has been leased by the municipality.

In Romania, parents, teachers and politicians have been complaining about the poor state of school infrastructure for years. There have often been allegations of negligence and bribery against construction supervision bodies.
